An audit and investigation by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli’s office of the Minetto Fire Department reportedly uncovered the alleged misappropriation of nearly $20,000 in department funds by Smegelsky Jr., the department chief.

The State Comptroller’s findings were referred to the New York State Police, who arrested Smegelsky today (July 1) and charged him with grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony.

Smegelsky is charged with using the department’s debit cards and credit cards to make personal purchases including guns, motorcycle equipment and items to support his personal landscaping business.

In addition, he claimed to have “sold” items to the department and received payment for these items that were unneeded and never used.

Smeglesky was arraigned Volney town court by Judge Patricia Kerfien, no bail was set.

His next court date is July 10 at Minetto Town Court.

DiNapoli’s audit of the Minetto Fire Department is expected to be finalized this fall.
