More Wins For Buc Basketball Teams

OSWEGO, NY – Basketball teams filled the sports schedule for Oswego High on Tuesday with the boys’ varsity and girls’ jayvee coming away with victories.

Bucs Win Opener

Balanced scoring, tenacious defense and teamwork contributed to the season opening victory for the Oswego High School boys’ varsity basketball team.

The Bucs kicked off the season at Powers Gymnasium on Tuesday with a 72-44 victory over Rome Free Academy.

Early on this was a close game, but about the midway point of the first quarter the Bucs went on a run and never looked back.

At the end of the first eight minutes of the season the Bucs were ahead 19-7 and by halftime the lead had ballooned to 30-14.

Four Bucs scored in double figures in a wide open, high speed offensive display.

Dustin Sands battled inside all night long and finished with 21 points while three Bucs each scored a dozen with Zach Gillard, Josh Gillard and Dylan Lavner equally splitting the 36 points.

Trevor Martin finished with six points while Nate Miller had five and Ryan Lavner four.

Lady Bucs Lose at RFA

In  action at Rome Free Academy, the Lady Buc varsity basketball team lost 48-28  to the 3-0 Black Knights.

Oswego held a 5-4 lead after the first quarter, but Rome got untracked in the second and moved out to a 16-13 advantage. The game was tight until halftime.

However, in the third quarter the home team put 18 points on the board while limiting the Bucs to just a half dozen points to build an insurmountable 34-19 advantage.

Leading Oswego were McKenna Brooks with eight and Marguerite Dillon with seven points.

Nicole McCarthy added five, Rachael Purtell four and Katherine Knopp three while Erica Atkins added a foul shot.

Jayvee Five to 3-0

The Lady Bucs jayvee girls’ basketball team moved to 3-0 with a 50-46 win over Rome Free.

The Bucs came out ready to play.  They pressured Rome full court causing turnovers.

Rome fought back in the first half and pressed Oswego, causing them to make turnovers and Oswego went into halftime trailing by one point.

Coming out in the second half the Bucs were determined to take over the game.

With leadership from the upper classmen, Oswego was able to take control.

The game was tied going into the last minute.

Claire Richardson made a huge basket off of an out of bounds play to put Oswego up two.

Rome was forced to foul and Kelly Skinner hit a free throw putting the Bucs up three.

Oswego went down to the other end and played great defense and got the ball back.

Again Rome was forced to foul.

Richardson hit both free throws to seal the game.

Leading scorers for Oswego were Claire Richardson with 17 points and nine rebounds, Olivia Dowdle chipped in 11 and six rebounds and Siara Wilson added seven points.  Kelly Skinner scored five points and had an impressive 13 rebounds.
