The fire that tore through a Granby apartment might have killed an infant, if not for the fast actions of a neighbor.

Now, the child’s mother has been charged with leaving the baby alone in the house.

State Police ticketed Rebecca E. Mabie, 25, of Apt. B8 at the Chateau West Apartments on West 11th St., Fulton. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Police allege she left the apartment to buy cigarettes from a neighbor in another apartment.

The 4 month old boy was left alone, sleeping on the living room couch.

A neighbor saw smoke coming from the home, rushed in and got the child out in time.

Fire, which appeared to start in the kitchen and is not considered suspicious, destroyed the apartment but firefighters prevented it from damaging the adjacent apartments.

Mabie is due in Granby Town Court Monday night.  Police and the Oswego County Department of Social Services are continuing to investigate.
