OSWEGO, NY – Despite the humidity, August 2013 goes into the record books as cooler than normal.
That’s right, cooler, according to Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service.
The average temperature last month was a pleasant 68.6 degrees, but that is 0.8-degree below average, Gregway noted.
The highest temperature was 85 degrees on the 21st and the lowest was 53 on the 24th.
There were no new records set.
“There were 7 days where it was 80 degrees or above (3 in a row) and once when the overnight low stuck in the 70s,” Gregway said. “Temperature wise it wasn’t a bad month. The humidity was a little tough at times.”
Total precipitation for August was 2.63 inches. That is 1.17 inches below average.
“It was another dry month,” Gregway said. “It was hot and humid at times. But, over all, it was a dry month.”
The greatest precipitation in a 24-hour period was 0.62-inch on the 31st.
“We had a couple other half-inchers. The precipitation, when it did come, came in spurts,” Gregway said. “Other than that, it was very dry.”
For example, he pointed to Aug. 9 when 0.25-inch fell in less than 5 minutes during a cloud burst.
Since the first of the year, total precipitation stands at 26.85 inches. That’s 0.13-inch below average.
August had just 10 days where measurable precipitation fell (3 in a row).
There were 4 days of just a trace and 17 days with no precipitation (streaks of 7days and 4 days in a row).
“It really was a dry month,” Gregway said.
The number of cloudy days, 8, was average.
The number of partly cloudy days, 15, was 3 above average.
The number of clear days, 8, was 3 below average.
August saw 63 percent of the possible amount of sunshine. That is just 1 percentage below average.
There were 4 thunderstorm days in August, which is 1 below average.
There was just 1 foggy day, which is 1 above average.
The highest barometric pressure was 30.36 on the 24th and 25th. The lowest was 29.74 on the 13th and 31st.
The strongest winds last month were greater than 35 mph on the 13th from the west-northwest.
“We also had some strong winds, over 25 mph, also west-northwesterly on the 4th and the 14th,” Gregway observed. “We had a good run of wind, especially in the first half of the month.”
In 2012, August came in at 71.8 degrees with a high of 94.
It tied for 7th warmest since 1844.
The precipitation was 1.64 inches below average. And, for the year it was about 7 inches below normal.
August 2012 received 7 percentages more sunshine than average.
The wettest August on record is 7.86 inches in 1992. The driest is 0.29-inch in 1874.
The coolest August came in 1866 when it was only 61.6 degrees. August 2001 is the warmest with an average temperature of 73.2 degrees.
The highest temperature on record in August is 98 degrees on the 22nd in 1883. The coldest is 42 degrees on the 27th in 1969.
