‘Music In Our Schools’ Month Kicks Off At Central Square

CENTRAL SQUARE – The Central Square Central School District has announced its schedule for March as “Music In Our Schools” month and the district invites students, parents and the entire Redhawks community to come support its outstanding student musicians.

“Music In Our Schools” month is an annual celebration during March which engages music educators, students, and communities from around the country in promoting the benefits of high quality music education programs in schools.

“Music programs in schools have a great positive effect on students. Playing a musical instrument and singing is a whole brain activity,” said Ron Haldeman, chairman of the CSCSD Music Department. “Students who practice and perform music demonstrate improvement in self-discipline, dexterity, coordination, self-esteem, thinking skills, listening and responding skills, creative abilities and personal expression,”

Music In Our Schools Month began as a single statewide Advocacy Day and celebration in New York in 1973 and grew over the decades to become a month-long celebration of school music in 1985.

It is facilitated by the National Association for Music Education.

“Students who perform in ensembles or other groups also have a greater appreciation for teamwork and are exposed to the importance of being community minded,” said Haldeman. “Learning to read music and perform music for oneself and for others are lifetime skills with many benefits.”
