New Board Chair Elected for Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways

Cicero, N.Y. – Sara Ayala of New Hartford was recently elected as the new chair for the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways Board of Directors. GSNYPENN serves girls in 26 counties of New York and Pennsylvania.

Ayala is a Lieutenant Colonel retired from the U.S. Air Force. She is a Computer Science graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and a Business Information Systems graduate at the University of Washington.

She has a 32-year career in management, program management, and acquisition management in communications, networking, and computers.

She works part time for the 5th District Court as a permanency mediator, volunteers as a mediator with the Peacemaker Program in Utica, and mediates Family Court and Small Claims situations.

She is a volunteer for the nationwide community collaborative rain, hail, and snow reporting agency.

She has previously volunteered with the Valley Oasis Domestic Violence Center in California, the Northern Virginia Suicide Hotline, and as a trainer for Boy Scouts budgeting and hiking awards. For two years she served as a HAZMAT First Responder in Southern California.

Other officers for the 2012-13 year are: 1st Vice Chair – Judy Suddaby of Syracuse; 2nd Vice Chair – Kim Lamar Shelton of Vestal; Secretary – Deborah Schwarting of Weedsport; and Treasurer – Susan Duerr of North Syracuse.

Two local women have been elected to two-year terms as new members to the Board of Directors: Cathleen McColgin of Skaneateles and Sonia Robinson of Oswego.

McColgin was born and raised in the Syracuse area.

She graduated from Jamesville-Dewitt High School and attended Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan and graduated with a degree in Respiratory Therapy. After returning to Central New York she obtained a nursing degree at Cayuga Community College and Syracuse University.

She began teaching at Cayuga Community College in 1988 as the Coordinator of the Nursing Arts Laboratory. In 2001 she was appointed as Provost of Cayuga Community College’s Fulton Campus.

Since August 2008 she has held the position of Provost and Senior Vice President of Onondaga Community College. She has served and currently serves on several college-wide and SUNY-wide committees and is also an evaluator of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

She served as an officer in the United States Army Reserve as a member of the 376th Combat Support Hospital, obtaining the rank of Captain.

Robinson is a Public Health Educator and Emergency Planning Coordinator for the Oswego County Health Department.

She is a graduate of the State University College at Cortland with a BS in Health Science and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree.

She has operated a small business from her home for more than 21 years.

She has extensive volunteer experience including Girl Scout Leader and volunteer in the Oswego Service Unit, Oswego School District Band Parent Association Board Vice President, Oswego Children’s Board, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, Boy Scouts of America, and the Oswego YMCA.
