NEW HAVEN – Students in grades pre-kindergarten through four at New Haven Elementary thanked local veterans with praise, song and handcrafted gifts during a recent Veterans’ Day celebration.
While students learned the importance of thanking a veteran for their service to their country, it was the veterans themselves who expressed gratitude to New Haven students and staff members for making them feel welcomed, appreciated and loved.
A few veterans even wiped tears from their eyes.
Student Lighthouse Leaders produced the effort with jobs including: door greeters, reading the school mission statement, leading guests in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the Star Spangled Banner, reciting Veterans’ Day facts, honoring each veteran in attendance and concluding the ceremony with a rendition of “God Bless the USA.”
New Haven teachers and students alike were decked out in red, white and blue clothing and some students wore paper flag creations in show of support for veteran attendees.
Several students from all grade levels also presented thank you letters and cards, pictures and handmade poppies out of red cupcake liners, black pom pom and green pipe cleaners.
A small reception was held prior to the assembly, and Principal Jennifer Granholm also sent each of the 30 veterans home with a certificate of appreciation.
