Oswego Mayor Tom Gillen greets Doris Allen on Sunday afternoon following his inaugural ceremony in City Hall.

It was 60 years ago to the day that Allen was sworn into office as the Port City’s very first woman alderman.

She paved the way for several other women to follow including Mary Ciappa, Barb Donahue, Cathy Santos and Connie Cosemento among others.

It was just last year that the title “alderman” was officially changed to the gender-neutral “councilor.”
