New Turf Field Almost Done at Fulton Athletic Complex

A worker takes a moment to laugh as he and his co-workers install the white yard numbers on the new artificial turf field at the Fulton Athletic Complex on a blazing hot recent day.

The new turf field at the Fulton school district athletic complex is nearly complete.

The field, complete with a huge block “F” Fulton logo, was installed over the past couple of weeks.

“It’s moving right along,” said Jerry Seguin, the district official in charge of the school district’s construction projects.

He said workers will start filling in the turf with layers of sand and rubber, which will make the artificial grass fibers stand up “and look more like grass”.

Work on the track that rings the football field should start on Monday, he said. Stairs for the bleachers are being priced now.

The district’s football and track teams spent the last year playing on the road because the field replacement project fell far behind schedule. Errors caused the district to have to spend more time and more money to tear up the grass field.

The work on the athletic field may be the most visible sign of the district-wide construction project, but is far from the only activity.

HIGH SCHOOL: Trees and grass have been installed at the rebuilt entrance area of the high school. New windows are going in, and Seguin noted that when the existing windows were removed, workers found that many of the windowsills were not attached. A new computer network operations center is nearly ready to go. The district will cut over to the new network in the first week of August. The Board of Education approved a change in construction plans to a walkway around the high school tennis courts. Workers discovered a high voltage line just 18 inches below the surface, so they’ll build the walkway higher to provide enough space above the line.

EDUCATION CENTER: The renovated auditorium is getting walkway lighting installed. “It looks really good in there,” said Seguin. The new elevator is working but needs some trim work to be completed. All asbestos is gone from the boiler room.

LANIGAN: New kitchen equipment is installed.

GRANBY: A new dishwasher is installed in the kitchen and some new flooring is going in.

VOLNEY: New kitchen equipment has been installed and new water distribution pumps and controls are working.

FAIRGRIEVE: Work is underway on the walking track. Kitchen work is ongoing. Roof work will begin about August 26 and will be complete a few days later.

JUNIOR HIGH: Roof work is underway and will be complete around August 25. New carpet has been installed in the music room. Tiling is beginning in the media center.
