SYRACUSE, NY – In a ceremony in Albany on September 21, New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) awarded the 2009 William B. Joslin Outstanding Performance Award to Mike Miles, a Syracuse resident who works in the Custodial division at Oswego Industries, Inc. A local ceremony will be held for Miles and his coworkers at the CNY DSO offices on Wilbur Avenue on Monday, October 19, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
“Anyone with a disability can achieve accomplishments,†said Mike in his acceptance speech at the Albany event. “If you can work, you should do so. It’s a wonderful feeling, the sense of achievement you can attain.â€Â
Each year, approximately 50 candidates from across the state are chosen as “Outstanding Performers†for the Joslin Awards; from among these, NYSID chooses one to receive their top award, celebrating personal success in both the workplace and at home. Although many Oswego Industries, Inc. employees have been named as Outstanding Performers, this is the first time an employee has won this top honor.
In addition to having a strong work ethic and a perfect attendance record, Mike is popular among coworkers and customers for his friendly manner, good sense of humor, and willingness to help whenever needed. Mike also helps his neighbors at his apartment building, assisting elderly tenants and those with limited mobility by running errands, doing laundry, and walking with tenants late at night for security.
