Bristol Hill Landfill Fire Caused by Improperly Disposed Lithium-Ion Battery Now Extinguished

VOLNEY, NY – A passerby called ‘911’ at approximately 3:55 a.m. today, Oct. 3, to report visible flames in the area of the Bristol Hill Landfill, 3125 NYS Rte. 3, Fulton.

 

Volney Fire Chief Kevin Hayden arrived on scene at 4:05 a.m. and confirmed an active fire within the landfill. The fire had spread across an estimated 200-foot by 200-foot area, with flames reaching nearly 20 feet in height.

 

Firefighters from the Volney Volunteer Fire Department, along with mutual aid fire departments and Oswego County Solid Waste personnel, worked to suppress the fire using an elevated master stream, multiple handlines and heavy equipment including a bulldozer and excavator. The blaze was contained by approximately 6:30 a.m.

 

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

 

All units cleared the fire scene by 10 a.m.

 

An investigation determined the fire was caused by an improperly disposed lithium-ion battery.

 

Authorities state that lithium-ion batteries from devices such as cell phones, laptops, and other electronics may be returned to participating retailers or dropped off at specialized collection sites. Additional information and drop-off locations are available on the Call2Recycle website[1].
