COVID-19 Statistics Update, December 29, 2020

OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 72 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since yesterday.

There are 865 known active cases across the county as of today.

“The increase in COVID-19 positive cases is tremendous,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “So far this month, we’ve had only one day when we reported less than 25 cases; the rest of our daily reports announced 40 or more. Compare that to the entire month of October – just two months ago – when we never had a day in which we reported more than 15 cases. These numbers are not merely statistics. They are our family members, friends and neighbors who represent the sad and indisputable fact that this disease is rampant in our communities. I urge all of our residents to take action and do their part to stop the spread of this disease. Follow the COVID-19 protocols to protect our communities and preserve our health care system. We must reduce the number of positive cases.”

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly video briefing yesterday. In it, he discussed the COVID-19 vaccine.

Weatherup said Phase One of the vaccine rollout began last week and will continue this week. Those approved to receive the first round of vaccines across the state include high-risk hospital workers (such as emergency room workers, intensive care unit staff and pulmonary department staff), nursing home residents and staff, long-term and congregate care residents and staff, emergency medical service workers, other health care workers, coroners and medical examiners.

Oswego Health is administering the vaccine to hospital-based health care workers and first responders.

Weatherup said according to the State Department of Health, Phase Two will include other essential workers and other prioritized groups, and is anticipated to begin around the end of January.

Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg gave more information about the vaccine, which will eventually be made available to all New York state residents free of charge.

She said the two vaccines that have been approved are more than 94% effective and have gone through the same rigorous review that all vaccines must go through in the U.S. There were three rounds of clinical trials with thousands  of participants in a diverse range of demographics. In yesterday’s video, Oldenburg said the state’s positive rate on Sunday was 5.7% and Oswego County’s was 7.2%.

“Oswego County and most of the counties around us continue to see increases in our COVID positivity rate,” Oldenburg said.

Oldenburg said the county has also received its first lab-confirmed case of someone sick with both COVID-19 and influenza. She emphasized the importance of getting a flu shot, especially during the pandemic while the health care system is already burdened.

Oswego County:[3] (as of 3 p.m.) Note, the total number of positive cases is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

101-150 confirmed cases: Constantia, Richland, Scriba

151-200 confirmed cases: Granby

201-250 confirmed cases: Schroeppel, Volney

251-300 confirmed cases: Hastings, Oswego Town

301-350 confirmed cases: City of Fulton

Over 400 confirmed cases: City of Oswego
