OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 20 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and two more residents have died since yesterday.

In regards to the two new resident deaths, Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang said, “These are our friends and neighbors. I want to send our sincere condolences to their families and friends.”

After a two-month surge in COVID-19 infections, Oswego County has seen cases fall in the past 10 days. Oswego County’s seven-day accumulated case count has decreased by 50%; down from its highest count of 643 on January 16, to 321 yesterday. The nation and the state have also shown a decline in new cases recently.

“The drop in cases, however welcome, does not mean that we are out of the woods,” Huang said. “We are still facing emerging coronavirus variants, a slow vaccine rollout, and continued ‘caution fatigue’ as the pandemic has stretched on for more than 10 months so far. Facing the challenge of inconsistent vaccine supply and the threat of coronavirus variants. Oswego County will continue to increase testing, trace close contacts, and vaccinate as vaccine becomes available. We ask residents to maintain safe behaviors, including hand-washing, face-masking, and social distancing.”

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly video briefing. In today’s update he discussed the vaccine.

Weatherup said that as of today, the county has administered 1,997 vaccine first doses. Beginning tomorrow, the health department will begin to hold clinics for second doses for first responders – both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require two doses for maximum efficiency.

“Requests for vaccines continue to far outnumber the vaccine supply in New York state,” Weatherup said. “The supply of vaccine that we receive remains inconsistent and is challenging for the health department to schedule clinics very far in advance. Here in Oswego County, we still haven’t received enough vaccine to take care of all the first responders and the first priority groups.”

He explained that hospitals are vaccinating doctors, nurses and medical workers; the health department is assigned to vaccinate essential workers identified as Phase 1b, which include first responders, educators, frontline workers facing the public such as cashiers, and others; local pharmacies are assigned to vaccinate those aged 65 and older. In Oswego County, these pharmacies include Kinney’s in Oswego, Fulton, Mexico and Pulaski, and Wayne Pharmacy in Oswego. Appointments can be made online.

“Clinics are usually not scheduled until the provider knows how much vaccine they are receiving from the state, so people need to keep checking the websites frequently,” Weatherup said.

Seniors aged 65 and older may contact the Office for the Aging for assistance in making an appointment online by calling 315-349-3484.

Weatherup said the county has been asked if the county can visit homebound seniors to vaccinate them.

“The current state guidance doesn’t include this population,” Weatherup said. “The New York State Department of Health is starting discussions around planning on how to vaccinate the eligible homebound population. We will follow the state guidance.”

The Oswego County Health Department has partnered with Pulaski Urgent Care to arrange for free COVID-19 rapid testing in Central Square on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Pulaski Urgent Care will bring its mobile unit to Paul V. Moore High School, 44 School Dr., Central Square and provide rapid COVID-19 tests at a drive-through clinic from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration is required. To register, visit this link[1] or call the Oswego County COVID-19 hotline at 315-349-3330. The hotline is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg also discussed guidance for high risk sports. More information can be found here[2].

“The state’s decision to permit higher risk sports and recreation activities does not that the COVID-19 risk has changed,” Oldenburg said. “The virus may be spread in locker rooms, school buses and other areas in addition to sports event venues.”

Weatherup also reminded residents that free transportation for vaccine and testing appointments is available. More information cab be found here[3].

Notes: The total number of positive cases in Oswego County is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

SUNY Oswego reset its numbers for the Winter/Spring 2021 semesters and does not include numbers from Aug. 12, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021.
