COVID-19 Statistics Update, January 12, 2021

OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 70 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and two more county residents have died since yesterday.

“Every death is an unfortunate development in our efforts to fight this virus and something that we never want to see,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “I would like to express our condolences to the families and friends of these two patients.”

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly video briefing today. In the update, he discussed the COVID-19 and eligibility to receive it.

More people are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. In addition to the frontline health care workers in the Phase 1A group who have not yet been vaccinated, residents aged 65 and older, those who are immunocompromised, first responders, public safety officers, teachers and other school staff, in-person college instructors, child care workers, public-facing grocery store workers, transit workers, and those living or working in homeless shelters. This is about 5.3 million residents in New York State.

Weatherup said there is confusion in how eligible people can make appointments to get vaccinated.

“Here are the facts,” Weatherup said. “No one will receive a vaccine without an appointment. There are no walk-in appointments. People can go through the state website [here[1]] to learn if they are eligible or they can call the New York State vaccination hotline at [1-833-697-4829]. If you are eligible, you will be directed to a list of places to make an appointment for the vaccine.”

He said servers were overloaded with requests yesterday and some the links on the state site were not functioning. He asks people to keep trying and to be patient. Some places, like the New York State Fairgrounds are booking several dates in advance.

“Vaccine supplies are our main challenge,” Weatherup said. “There are very limited allotments of COVID vaccine coming from the state to Oswego County. We have people clamoring for the vaccine and our county health department is ready. All doses that we have received have been administered. Oswego County has mass vaccination plans in place that we practice every year. All we need is for the state to send us more vaccines on a regular schedule and plan and publicize vaccination clinics.”

Weatherup said if the state does not begin to receive more vaccines from the federal government, it could take 14 weeks for people in the first two priority groups to get vaccinated.

“We have no choice but to work with what we have and under the rules that the state has established,” Weatherup said. “Patience and continued proper measures will help us persevere.”

He said those who are vaccinated receive their second dose three to four weeks after the first. It is not until then that they will begin to become more fully protected, so people should continue to follow the regular protocols such as wearing a face mask, avoiding unnecessary gatherings, and frequent hand washing.

Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg said there are more people eligible for the vaccine than there are doses available. She said the county is fully ready to administer the vaccines as they are received.

The Oswego County Health Department is accepting applications from active and retired medical professionals who want to volunteer to help in the department’s COVID-19 response activities. More information can be found here[2].

Notes: The total number of positive cases in Oswego County is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

SUNY Oswego reset its numbers for the Winter/Spring 2021 semesters and does not include numbers from Aug. 12, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021.
