OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 68 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and three more county residents have died since yesterday.

Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly video briefing today and discussed a decline in cases, the vaccine, and opportunities for county residents.

“I am happy to report that we are starting to see a decline in the number of new COVID cases in the county,” Weatherup said. “Although case reports have started to decline, we have now lost 78 members of our Oswego County community to COVID-19. On behalf of the Oswego County Legislature, I extend our sympathy to their families and loved ones.”

Weatherup said the community needs to remain proactive and take protective measures to protect against the spread of the virus.

In regards to the vaccine, he said the supply of doses to Oswego County remains inconsistent, and so it is challenging for the health department to schedule vaccination clinics far in advance.

Although the county cannot control the number of vaccines provided by the state, it can now help residents in need of transportation to a vaccine appointment or to get tested for COVID-19. More information can be found here[1].

Sara Sunday, Director of the Office for the Aging, also spoke in the video offering help to the county’s elderly population in navigating the state’s Am I Eligible website, to register for a vaccination appointment, and sharing information on events.

“We are not vaccinators, but we are working with vaccinators to try to share up to date information on what is available,” Sunday said. “The Office for the Aging is not keeping a waitlist for the vaccine. We are documenting each call that comes into the office and tracking how many people contact us requesting the vaccine.”

Sunday said if the answering machine picks up at the OFA, leave a message and someone will return your call. She also reminded residents that the OFA has a program where someone from the office calls a resident on a weekly basis for a friendly chat and robotic pets are available to keep the elderly company. Call the OFA at 315-349-3484.

Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg said beginning next week, the health department will be partnering with Pulaski UrgentCare to bring 100 free COVID-19 rapid-tests to locations around the county. The Pulaski UrgentCare will bring its mobile unit to a different location each week. The rapid tests will be offered to those who live and/or work in Oswego County. Registration will be done online and more details are to come.

Oldenburg said the county has heard some people have had more side effects with their second dose of the vaccine than the first, including fatigue, muscle and joint pain and/or a low fever.

“Although these side effects are typically brief, our medical director, Dr. Liepke, suggests that people take Tylenol or Motrin an hour after receiving the second dose of vaccine if they are experiencing side effects or had side effects with the first dose,” Oldenburg said.

Notes: The total number of positive cases in Oswego County is cumulative since March and the number of recoveries and deaths are of those numbers. SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.

SUNY Oswego reset its numbers for the Winter/Spring 2021 semesters and does not include numbers from Aug. 12, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021.
