OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 89 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and three more county residents have died since yesterday.
As of January 3, Oswego County’s positivity rate was 9.4% – the highest it has been since the beginning of the pandemic.
“Sadly, since the beginning of the pandemic, we have now lost 47 of our Oswego County residents to the COVID-19 virus,” said Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup. “That is a heavy burden. Again, on behalf of the County Legislature, I want to express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of each of these individuals.”
Weatherup briefed the public today in his weekly video update. In today’s video, he discussed the COVID-19 vaccine, which is becoming available on a limited scale through the New York State Vaccination Program.
The state has set strict schedules for priority groups to be vaccinated. Oswego Health and the Oswego County Health Department aim to deploy the vaccine to the best of their ability within the guidelines set by the state.
Oswego Health received the vaccination December 23 and quickly organized a vaccination clinic and began to administer the first round of the vaccine on December 24.
“Since then, a total of 1,159 doses have been delivered and scheduled for Oswego Health staff, first responders and community providers,” Weatherup said. “The Oswego County Health Department has received a limited supply of the vaccine and the Health Department will also strictly follow the state-prioritized schedules to administer the vaccine.”
He said the health department is working with employers that fall into the priority grouping to vaccinate their employees. The health department will be accepting applications from medical professionals who would like to volunteer in administering the vaccine.
“We recognize that many people are anxious to be vaccinated,” Weatherup said. “It’s important that everyone realizes we must follow the plan established by the State Department of Health. There are heavy penalties and fines for those who don’t follow the state guidance on this. The situation is very fluid and we ask for your patience as we work through the process.”
He said after all frontline staff are vaccinated, the next priority groups include outpatient and frontline high-risk health care workers, people who work in medical practices, public health clinics, dentists, diagnostic and treatment centers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, home care workers and aides, hospice workers, staff and residents of nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities and adult care facilities.
In response to county residents’ worries about the effectiveness of the two vaccines approved in the state, Senior Public Health Educator Diane Oldenburg explained that the vaccines are more than 94% effective and have gone through the same rigorous review that all vaccines must go through in the U.S.

SUNY Oswego cases are included in the county numbers, however, the county tracks only those living in Oswego County. That means that students who chose to leave and go back to their home county and test positive there will be included on the college’s dashboard, but not the county’s. Their positive result would be reported to their home county, not here.
