OSWEGO COUNTY – According to the Oswego County Health Department, as of 3 p.m., there have been 29 additional cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since Friday, September 4.
The cumulative reported number 361 is cases across the county and of those, 304 have recovered and four have died.
Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup posted his weekly COVID-19 briefing this afternoon. In the video, Weatherup discussed the start of school and COVID-19 safety measures.
“I hope everyone had a safe Labor Day weekend. Labor Day means it’s the start of the school year and districts across the county are getting ready to reopen under vastly different circumstances than they did a year ago,” Weatherup said.
“With the start of the school year, it’s very important that we continue to take the disease seriously, and to take the necessary precautions to keep all of our residents safe and healthy.”
Weather spoke honestly about the potential rise in cases with the start of school, reassuring area residents of the preparation local districts and the Health Department have implemented.
“It would be naive of us to think that there will not be new clusters and cases of COVID when the schools reopen. Our Health Department will have a key role in helping the districts with contact tracing, case investigation, isolation and quarantine protocols,” Weatherup said.
Oswego County Senior Health Department Educator Diane Oldenburg also spoke, updating residents on the latest COVID numbers, urging residents to stay vigilant in their safety protocols.
“Over the past weeks, we’ve seen quite a lot of new activity. We want to assure you that the County Health Department is working closely with community members, local school districts, SUNY Oswego and the State Department of Health to monitor and contain the virus,” Oldenburg said. “COVID-19 is highly contagious, so it’s not unusual to spread amongst individuals living or socializing together. The Oswego County Health Department reminds all community members that they must take protective actions to limit the spread of the virus, including maintaining social distance and limitining interaction amonst family and friends they do not live with.”
Please note that the numbers in today’s report include data from Saturday, Sunday, Monday and today. The county did not release data yesterday due to Labor Day.

The county has stopped releasing data for pending results, number of people in precautionary quarantine and total number completed/released from monitoring. Data will not be released on Saturdays or Sundays. Antibody test results are released once a week.
In the event that a person who tests positive for COVID-19 had public exposure when they were contagious and the health department could not contact those at risk individually, a news release is issued. Investigations go back two days prior to symptom onset for symptomatic positive patients, or two days prior to testing for asymptomatic positive patients, up until the time a positive patient is isolated.

The Oswego County Health Department announced yesterday it is working with officials from SUNY Oswego after 21 additional cases of COVID-19 were identified among students living both on and off campus between Friday, September 4, and yesterday, September 7. More information can be found here[4].
As the SUNY Oswego campus moves from baseline COVID-19 testing to aggressive surveillance testing, President Deborah F. Stanley announced yesterday that Funnelle Hall will be used to house additional students who may need to be moved into campus-supported quarantine rooms. More information can be found here[5].

Governor Cuomo has partnered with New Jersey Governor Murphy and Connecticut Governor Lamont to create a joint travel advisory for individuals traveling from states with significant community spread of COVID-19, requiring a quarantine for 14 days when visiting their states.
Based on each region’s infection rate, schools across New York State are permitted to open this fall but each school district must have a testing and tracing plan and will decide if an in-person v. hybrid model works best for them while following strict Department of Health Guidance.
Malls in New York City will be allowed to reopen starting September 9 with a 50 percent occupancy limit but will be subject to strict safety protocols.
Casinos and video lottery terminal facilities statewide will be allowed to reopen starting September 9 with a 25 percent occupancy limit but will be subject to strict safety protocols.
