OSWEGO COUNTY – Thanksgiving Day may look a little different this year as New Yorkers continue to follow social distancing measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
As families gather, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York is urging New Yorkers to follow some basic cooking safety tips.
Unfortunately, Thanksgiving is traditionally the peak day for home cooking fires. Data[1] from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) shows that Thanksgiving in 2016 experienced 1,570 home cooking fires, the most of any day throughout the year.
“Fire departments across the state have responded to an increased number of home fires since the beginning of the COVID pandemic,“ said FASNY President John P. Farrell. “With many people staying home, increased meal preparations and added distractions can lead to fires. We urge all New Yorkers to follow some simple safety tips to avoid a holiday accident.”
According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), home cooking is one of the leading contributing factors in home fires and fire deaths. New York State is third in the nation in home fire deaths, with 94[2] recorded this year.
One of the more notable safety risks applicable to Thanksgiving is deep-frying turkeys. Doing so can be extremely dangerous[3] and can lead to serious burns and property damage. If an individual decides to use a turkey fryer, they should insure that the turkey is completely thawed before frying. The fryer should also only be used outside and away from any structures and flammable objects.
“When preparing your holiday feast, please remember Thanksgiving is one of the top days for home fires,” said President Farrell. “We want all New Yorkers to enjoy their time together this Thanksgiving and on behalf of FASNY, I wish everyone a safe and happy weekend.”
With the increased risk this day brings to families across New York, FASNY encourages families to adhere to the following safety tips to insure that they have a safe holiday:
