2500 Fulton Area Residents Without Power After Transformer Fire

UPDATE (9/21/2015) – Power has been restored to the majority of National Grid customers affected by the equipment failure in Fulton last night (September 20), according to National Grid.
After service was restored to many of the affected residences at approximately 3:30 this morning, nearly 80 customers are still left without power, said Virginia Limmiatis of National Grid.
“If any customers are still experiencing an outage, they can call 1-800-867-5222 to work with us one-on-one to better solve any issues,” said Limmiatis.

FULTON, NY – Approximately 2500 customers have been without power since 7:32 this evening (Sept. 20) when a transformer caught fire on West Fifth Street in Fulton, according to National Grid and Fulton City Police Department.
A transformer on West Fifth Street in Fulton caught fire resulting in 2500 National Grid customers in the Fulton area without power.
The call was reported at 7:04 p.m. to Fulton City Police Department, originally made for a transformer smoking on West Fifth Street South, between West Broadway and Beech Street.
“The transformer was overloaded related to the way National Grid had to divert power after the accident this morning on West Third Street,” said Captain Stafford of the Fulton Fire Department. “It overheated and then blew, catching fire. We had to wait for power to be cut, but the fire was completely extinguished in about an hour and we were on scene for almost two hours.”
National Grid confirmed that the fire was caused as a result of the repairs that had been made earlier in the day on West Third Street South, when an impaired driver collided with a utility pole.[1]
Many of the customers in the affected area are the same customers that went without power for hours earlier in the day as a result of the accident.
The customers are without power due to equipment failure as a result of repairs made to the feeder line on W. Third Street, according to Kathy Hill of National Grid.
“We have crews working diligently on our end. At this point, it’s estimated that customers will regain power around midnight,” said Hill.
