A Perfect Night for a Parade as Hannibal Opens its Field Days

Hannibal turned out for its annual parade Thursday night. Half of the community was in the parade and the other half lined the streets of the village to applaud the passing bands, politicians and floats.

The parade ran for more than an hour, from the Island Band’s opening notes to the horses that always mark the end of the parade. (Not counting the unofficial last float, a political protest against the lack of mosquito spraying by Palermo businessman Steve Burdick that said the first place to be sprayed should be county Republican Party headquarters.)

The parade is the opening event of the Hannibal Volunteer Fire Company’s Field Days[1]. Along with the rides, games of chance and chicken barbecue, the event features music each night. The Fulton Chain Gang’s country-rock capped Thursday night. Pop and rock dance band Ruby Shooz plays Friday night, and national country music performer Chuck Weeks ends the festival on Saturday night.
