Annual Memorial Day Celebration Brings Fun to Fulton

FULTON, NY – Memorial Day weekend brings out the bands, food, fun and a lot of red, white and blue for Fulton’s annual Memorial Day Salute.
People of all ages gathered along both sides of Broadway/Route 3 to watch the parade commence.
The excitement continued at the carnival in the War Memorial parking lot full of rides and games and entertainment and food in the ice rink, followed by fireworks at night.
“It’s so much fun for the kids,” said mother, Danielle Fellows. “They love getting the candy and seeing everything in the parade and then doing the rides down the road. We come every year.”
Her son, four-year-old Colten Fellows enjoys the parade most.
Department. A number of other local fire departments were represented in the parade.
“I like getting the candy and seeing the cool stuff and the people walking,” he said.
Four-year-old Mason Shatraw prefers the carnival portion of the event.
“I like the rides and the fireworks the most. The round and round ride that goes way high in the air and the roller coaster are really fun,” he said.
Multiple organizations, groups and businesses participated in the parade following this year’s theme of “Remember Those Who Served.”
Sitting in as Grand Marshal for 2015 was honored Veteran of the Year, John Young.
The judging committee had the final say in who won in a variety of categories.
The committee consisted of Garry Vicsconti, president of the Fulton Veterans’ Council; Peggy Donnelly, representative of Fulton Sunrise Rotary Club; Lori Greenier, president of the Fulton Rotary; Holly Carpenter, president of Kiwanis; and Carri Brooks and Zach Merry, representatives of the Lions Club.
Together, they selected Downbeat Percussion as the Grand Marshal Trophy winner.
Downbeat percussion was a very lively, entertaining group of drummers.
Standing in a line using their own drum and using the drum of the person next to them, the crowd was very engaged in their performance.
A lot of jumping and excitement by the performers helped solidify their first place ranking.
Children’s groups category gave out awards to Boy Scouts in first place, Fulton High School band in second place and Off Broadway Dance in third place.
Theme trophy was presented to Longley Dodge.
Best music trophy was awarded to The Original Yanks.
And Veterans category presented trophies to Fort Drum Marching Band in first, Fulton Veterans’ Council in second and Fort Drum Color Guard in third.
Candy, books, and informational pamphlets were handed out by a variety of parade entries.
A multitude of mascots, characters and service people such as firefighters, local haunted attraction workers in scary costumes, Ronald McDonald and Oswego Industries monkey, were available for pictures, high-fives and hugs as well.
The carnival boasted rides for kids and adults, games, food, face painting, and entertainment including The Billionaires, Josh Batstone, Fulton Dixieland Band and Fulton Community Band.
The event lasted all day long and was followed by fireworks being set off at 9:30 p.m.
