Antiques dealer has high aspirations for new shop

FULTON, NY – Sharon LeBeau has big plans for 213 Mount Pleasant Road. The small house where LeBeau and her husband both live and operate Scotland Yards Antiques and Collectibles will soon be expanded.

Also on the property sits a trailer that will be expanded to nearly three times its size, and feature the façade of 221B Baker Street – just like in the famous Sherlock Holmes novels.

LeBeau has been in the antiques business for 17 years and previously ran a shop in Oswego.

Recently, she had to find a more permanent location, and made the move out to Fulton.

Scotland Yards just opened on April 1, and from teacups to dolls, rolling pins to dressers LeBeau has a wonderful collection.

And the shop has already been busy.

As for the store’s moniker, LeBeau has always loved Sherlock Holmes and mystery stories of any kind.

“I’ve always loved him,” she said of Holmes. “All the old movies and all the books.”

Her own murder mystery novel, set in Oswego County, Kill 52: The Spade Card Murders, was recently published. The mystery novel will be expanded into a series featuring each suit in a deck of playing cards.

“Everything has a story, and that’s such a great thing.” she said which is one of the reasons she loves what she does.

She is fascinated by the history behind each of her pieces and wants to share her excitement with young folks.

When the expanded version of Scotland Yards is complete, LeBeau plans to include a children’s room. Here, with parent permission, kids will be able to buy and sell antiques.

The only requirement is they have to research and provide a short write-up telling the story of each of their wares.

She hopes this area will provide parents and children an opportunity not only to do something together, but get interested in the business.

“Antiques dealers aren’t dying out,” said LeBeau. “But if we can start them at a young age, we can give kids the chance to bring something out.”

There are other large antique shops in Oswego County, such as Ozzie’s, and LeBeau’s dream is for this area to become a destination for people looking for antiques and collectibles shops.

She envisions people visiting the area to tour all the different shops, “When it’s warm weather and people want to go for a drive,” LeBeau said.

Scotland Yards is currently open Tuesday-Thursday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Wednesday-Friday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Once the weather improves and construction is further along, LeBeau plans to expand her hours.

The store will be open until November 1 before closing shop for winter.
