Carvey Joins Fulton Board of Education

Fulton’s Board of Education is back to full strength after David Carvey was sworn in to take over a vacant seat on Tuesday.

Carvey recited his oath of office and signed the required form moments after the board certified the results of this month’s voting on the budget for 2011-12 and for four seats on the seven-member board.

Carvey finished fourth, just five votes higher than the fifth-place finisher.  Because he finished fourth, he will fill the unexpired term of Janet Truong, who resigned for personal reasons earlier this year.

His term runs through the 2012-13 school year.

“It’s an honor to be here,” he said. “I hope I can live up to the public’s expectations.”

“It’s not just two meetings a month,” board member Brian Hotaling joked about the workload of a board member. “They tell you that after you’re elected.”

The other three new board members will take their seats in July, when the terms run out for three current board members who chose not to run for reelection.  They will serve through the 2013-14 school year.

Of the three, one, Fred Cavailer, was in the audience for Tuesday’s meeting.

Former board member David Cordone and retired school principal Barbara Hubbard are the other new members.

“We’re lucky to have had quality people step up”, said board President Robbin Griffin.

The final election results:

For Board of Education (4 seats open):

• David Cordone, 829 votes;
• Barbara Hubbard, 785;
• Frederick Cavalier, 612;
• David Carvey, 575;
• Teresa Loetterle, 570;
• Christine Plath, 472;
• Sandy Rogers, 416.

The proposed 2011-12 school budget:

• Yes, 624 votes;
• No, 573.

The transportation proposition:

• Yes, 577 votes;
• No, 527.
