City Gets Christmas Decorations at Discount This Year

The City of Fulton rents Christmas decorations each year to hang from light poles in the city’s business districts.  This year’s decorations will cost less than last year’s.

Tuesday, Common Council members approved the city’s $14,687 contract with its provider for this year’s decorations.  Mayor Ron Woodward said this year’s contract was 20% lower than last year’s.

“We met with the Downtown Committee [of the Chamber of Commerce] to try to improve some of the decorations,” Woodward said.  “The business community likes to have them up by Thanksgiving.”

In other business, the Council:

• Transferred $3,000 into an account used to pay small claims for minor accidents.  The account helps the city avoid turning the claim into its insurance company;
• Transferred $8,000 into an account being used to pay an outside law firm helping the city negotiate its next contract with the union that represents Fulton firefighters.  Bond, Schoeneck & King is the law firm.  “We’re getting closer,” Woodward said of negotiations;
• Approved the city’s annual $10,000 payment to Operation Oswego County, the county’s economic development arm.  Operation Oswego County takes the lead to market vacant industrial properties in Fulton, including the former Nestle plant and the soon-to-close Birds-Eye plant;
• Changed a section of the south side of the 600 block of Academy St. from S. Seventh St. to “no standing”.  Woodward said that crossing guards near Fairgrieve Elementary School have complained about the safety of children from cars standing in that area;
• Awarded a bid for a replacement chain to be used in the Waste Water Treatment Plant, for $10,022 to BDI;
• Confirmed or noted appointments to the Zoning Board of Appeals and Board of Assessment Review
