FULTON, NY – A one-vehicle accident reported at 11:13 a.m. on Sunday (September 20) left a portion of West Third Street closed and a number of Fulton residents without power.

29-year-old Nathen MacDonald, of 12 Germandale Drive, Fulton, struck his vehicle into a telephone pole on the 700 block of West Third Street South in Fulton at approximately 10 minutes after 11 this morning, according to the Fulton City Police Department.
“There was drug use involved in the accident. According to MacDonald, he fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the pole,” said Officer Christopher Jones.

MacDonald was charged with Driving with ability impaired by drugs (misdemeanor), Aggravated unlicensed operation 3rd degree (misdemeanor), Criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th (misdemeanor), and Failure to keep right.
While no injuries were reported, the accident left many Fulton residences without power, and the intersection at Broadway and West First Street where a major traffic light was without power for hours.
The roadway needed to be shut down for much of the day until power could be restored, police said.
“The power has since been restored to that intersection and National Grid is working diligently to restore power to the remaining customers,” said Officer Jones.
The section of West Third Street between Cedar Street and Curtis Street remains closed while work is being done to the damaged pole.
MacDonald was released on bail and is due back in Fulton City Court on Sept. 24 at 9 a.m.
