On Sunday, June 29, during the 11 AM Worship Hour, Robin A. Braunstein, Director of SAF, a division of Oswego County Opportunities, will bring the story of the White Ribbon Campaign, a special effort now in its 14th year held during the month of June, to stop violence against women and children. Donations will be accepted during the month of June toward the support of SAF, especially the women’s shelter within the county.

This international White Ribbon Campaign began in Montreal, Canada, in 1991 when a single gunman killed 14 women in a deliberately targeted rampage. A small group of men immediately took up the challenge of defending women from unwelcome and sometimes lethal forms of emotional and physical assault. The white ribbon has become the symbol of standing against such violence in 16 countries.

White Ribbons have been distributed at First United Church, ribbons which signify solidarity with the pledge, “I will never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls.” Wearing the ribbon says, “Our future has no violence against women.”

On June 29th Ms. Braunstein will outline the sobering statistics of what we often refer to as domestic violence. For example, around the world at least one in three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. And, three in four women who reported they had been raped and or physically assaulted since age 18 said that a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, or date committed the assault. The role of the religious community will also be explored as a positive agency for preventing domestic violence.

First United Church is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, USA and the Presbyterian Church (USA). Each worship service has hearing assistance and large print bulletins. Nursery care is offered. Handicap access is available through the Utica Street entrance. Please call in advance for assistance.

An All-Church Picnic will be held following the service on Sunday, June 29th. For further information about the day and other ministries offered by First United Church of Fulton, please contact Rev. David Nethercott, pastor of First United Church of Fulton and West Baptist Church of Oswego (592-2707).
