The cost of driving went up while you slept.

The fee charged for every vehicle registration and license rose effective today. And soon, you’ll be forced to get a new license plate and pay extra to keep your current license plate number.

A motor vehicle registration now costs $55. Yesterday, the cost was $44. Today, the eight-year renewal of your driver’s license will cost $62.50, up from $50 yesterday. The two increases will add about $80,000 to the state’s revenues — a tiny drop in the bucket of a multi-billion dollar deficit, which was the reason for increasing these fees.

Next April, you’ll have to get a new license plate. The state claims the reflective material on the current plates is wearing out. You’ll pay $25 for your new plates, up from $15. And if you want to keep your current license plate number, it’ll be 20 bucks more.

There is also a higher price for one of the state’s Enhanced Driver Licenses, which have the extra information embedded in them to allow you to cross the border into Canada. The new cost is $93.75, up from $75 yesterday.

“People are getting hit every step of the way,” said Buffalo area Republican State Senator George Maziarz in a news release complaining about the increases. “People ask me ‘when is it going to stop?”
