OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Monday evening.
The fire, at 87 Ontario St., was reported at 6:53 p.m.
When the first fire department units arrived three minutes later, smoke was showing from the rear of the two-story wooden structure.
All occupants of the building were confirmed to be safely outside the building.
As firefighters advanced a hose line toward the back door, fire blew out of two windows just as they passed by.
The hose was brought inside the house, and firefighters extinguished the flames in a vestibule, a bathroom/laundry room, and the kitchen area.
The fire was brought under control within five to six minutes.
The home’s occupant, Sarah Mangano, was at work at the time of the fire.
Her two-year-old son, Mark, was home under the care of Amanda Laclair and Zachary Thompson, both 19.
The two teens were able to get Mark safely out of the house when the fire was discovered.
Deputy Chief Mark McManus said that there was heavy fire damage to the three rooms at the rear of the building, and that there was water damage and heavy smoke and heat damage to the rest of the structure.
Cause and Origin investigators determined that the fire was caused by a large amount of debris behind the electric clothes dryer in the laundry room being ignited by heat from the dryer and spreading to the walls and floor of the room.
The cause was considered to be accidental.
The American Red Cross was assisting Ms. Mangano, as the house was uninhabitable.
She stated that she planned to stay overnight with relatives.
The Disaster Action Team of the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the residential fire, according to a Red Cross spokesperson.
The residence is uninhabitable because of severe smoke and water damage, he said, adding the Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the family of two left homeless by the fire.
