FULTON, NY – Two Fulton Police Department veterans are retiring from the department and will embark on new journeys.
Lieutenant Dave Luddington retired as of May 11, following 24 years of service to the Fulton community.
Luddington started his career at the Fulton Police Department in 1994, receiving a promotion to Sergeant in 2006 and a final promotion to Lieutenant in 2010, also serving as the department’s D.A.R.E. officer prior to his final promotion.
“During his time at the police department (Lt. Luddington) was and is known as a very personable individual that always took time out to talk with public,” said Mike Curtis, Fulton Police Department Investigator.
Luddington is now working as the City of Fulton’s Animal Control Officer.
Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. said Luddington was a perfect fit for the part-time position given his familiarity with similar circumstances while working for the FPD.
“Dave Luddington has picked up dogs before when we needed the police department to handle dog control and there is a lot of paperwork involved, so he is familiar with the process. The majority of dogs that are picked up are unlicensed. We stress licensing, not for the money like some may think, but because the biggest concern is that in order to license a dog they have to have their rabies shot. That’s important in case someone was to be bit,” Mayor Woodward said.
His familiarity with the position and having passed a “competitive exam” were staples in selecting Luddington for the position, Woodward said.
He has begun his new position and is already working on completing a dog census for the city. If a dog is found to be unlicensed, owners will have a timeline in which to license them before they are issued a court appearance.
Although by law the city is only required to pick up dogs, Luddington will be completing a training course in order to trap nuisance animals when needed.
Additionally, Fulton Police Department Sergeant Aimee May will be retiring as of today (May 25).
After more than 20 years of service to the community, Sgt. May will begin working for the Oswego County Child Advocacy Center.
Hired as a police officer in 1997, May was promoted to Investigator in 2009 and Sergeant in 2014. May also served as the department’s D.A.R.E officer for a period of time.
“During her time on patrol, (Sgt. May) received several traffic safety related awards,” Curtis said.
A veteran city employee in the clerk’s office also retired as of May 11.
Sue Hudson, wife of retired Fulton firefighter Dave Hudson, is embarking on retirement after more than 10 years as a Senior Account Clerk for the city.
“Sue’s primary job was payroll. This made her very popular. During the time that she was with the city I often requested retirement related payroll information for members of my department. Sue was always timely and helpful during theses times and was very pleasant to deal with. Every time I made a request she was able to help me out. Her great attitude and knowledge will be missed,” Curtis said.
