FULTON – May 10th, 2024, The recent Fulton Common Council Meeting held in New York State paid tribute to Joseph J. Mancino, a well-known and loved member of the community who passed away recently. The resolution of respect was passed to honor Mancino and his many achievements. Born in Syracuse, he was a brilliant student who graduated as the salutatorian of his class at North High. He went on to play college football for the University of Miami. Mancino was famous for his great steaks at the Seneca Motel/Fulton Ale House, which he owned in Fulton for 52 years. He could often be found dancing with his beloved wife, Patty, reminiscing and telling jokes with friends and family. Mancino was also a past President of the Oswego County Tavern Keepers Association and later owned and operated 481 Liquor and Wine. An avid golfer, he participated in many area leagues and tournaments in surrounding counties. He leaves behind his loving wife, Patty Colloca Mancino, his two children, Bert Mancino and Judith Tupper, along with his daughter-in-law Amy DiMetri, grandsons Alex and Andrew Mancino, three great-grandchildren, and several extended family members who he loved very much.
The City of Fulton will sponsor an observance during May 1-7 as Youth Week, which is a time designated by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks to honor America’s Junior Citizens for their accomplishments and services to the Community, State, and Nation. The Mayor and members of the Common Council urge all departments of government, civic, fraternal, and patriotic groups, and citizens to participate wholeheartedly in its observance. The aim is to guide, inspire, encourage, and prepare today’s youth for the responsibilities and opportunities of citizenship.
The importance of mental health was emphasized at the meeting, and the need to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts. All Americans experience times of difficulty and stress in their lives, and prevention is an effective way to reduce the burden of mental health conditions. There is a strong body of research that supports specific tools that all Americans can use to better handle challenges and protect their health and well-being. Mental health conditions are real and prevalent in our nation, and with early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives. Each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, organization, and citizen shares the burden of mental health problems and has a responsibility to support prevention efforts.
May was declared as Older Americans Month, a time to recognize and honor older adults and their immense influence on every facet of American Society. Through their wealth of life experience and wisdom, older adults guide our younger generations and carry forward abundant cultural and historical knowledge. Older Americans improve our communities through intergenerational relationships, community service, civic engagement, and many other activities. Communities benefit when people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds have the opportunity to participate and live independently. It is essential to ensure that older Americans have the resources and support needed to stay involved in their communities, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and connectedness.
