Fulton Declares September Attendance Awareness Month

FULTON, NY – School district and city officials came together to proclaim the month of September 2016 as School Attendance Awareness Month in the city of Fulton.

At a regular council meeting held Tuesday (Sept 6) members of the Fulton Common Council as well as Mayor Ronald Woodward Sr. presented the proclamation to officials from the Fulton City School District including Superintendent of Schools, Brian Pulvino and Director of Student Support Services, Geri Geitner, among others.

The proclamation cited evidence noting that missing ten percent or more of school for any reason is correlated to academic trouble and dropout rates leading to a weakened community and local economy.

Together, school and city officials aim to combat chronic absences by working together with parents and families throughout the community to address hurdles that prevent students from getting to school.

The main focus on absenteeism as described in the proclamation is “to give all children equitable opportunity to learn, grow and thrive academically, emotional and socially.”

“Without good attendance, children have no exposure to the instruction and support we provide for academic success. Every student needs to be present everyday so we can give them the educational tools they need to be successful not just in school, but in life,” Geitner said.

With this declaration, city and school officials invite community members of all ages to the Attendance Awareness Month Celebration and Raider Rally event to be held on September 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the G. Ray Bodley High School Athletic Complex.
