Fulton Joins Other Cities in Buying Cooperative

The City of Fulton is joining the local-government equivalent of a Sam’s Club.

City lawmakers recently approved the city’s participation in a cooperative with other cities in the state.  The cooperative will try to save money on big purchases by buying in bulk.

This cooperative, Mayor Ron Woodward explained, is aimed at buying fire department equipment and vehicles.

“Doesn’t cost us anything” to be part of it, he said.

He’s beginning to be concerned about the state of the city’s fire trucks.  One pumper is 30 years old, he said.

A typical new pumper costs half a million dollars, he said.

In other recent actions, the Common Council:

• Approved a resolution thanking volunteers for the work they do for the city;
• Okayed signing a lease agreement with Steven Cole to allow him to live in the house located at the City Waterworks, for $400 a month.  “He pays rent and we have a 24 hour attendant,” Woodward explained.  The city has done this for decades;
• Agreed to advertise for public hearings on two right of way requests, at 109 Fay St. and at the Oswego Hospital Urgent Care Center on S. Fourth St.  The Fay St. home wants to build a driveway, Woodward explained.  The current driveway is on a neighbor’s land and is shared with the neighbor, but that relationship is ending.  Oswego Hospital wants to build more parking spaces.  Both plans have been approved by the Fulton Planning Commission;
• Renewed a $1,593 contract with Physio Control for maintenance  and service of fire department defibrillators;
• Approved a contract with Robison and Smith of Canastota for laundering of fire department linens, at a substantial savings over the current contract with another company;
• Agreed to remove three parking spaces along Academy St., in front of Hair We Are, near the corner of Route 481;
• Approved an extension of its contract with First Niagara Benefits Consulting, a company working to lower the city’s health insurance costs.  Woodward said the company will be involved as the city begins negotiations with its three unions on new contracts this year.
