To kick-off the New York State Library’s 2008 Summer Reading Program, Catch The Reading Bug And Metamorphosis @ Your Library, Fulton Public Library encourages students to come to the library, make friends, have fun – and read. For more than 10 years, the 1,200 New York State libraries have been working closely with the schools to keep children and teens reading when school is not in session. Libraries play a critical role in maintaining reading levels over the summer, which research shows is as important as the structured reading curriculum during the academic year. Children who participate in library summer reading programs return to school in the fall ready to learn at grade level

According to educational research, if children select their own reading materials, this positive experience leads to more time spent reading and improved reading ability. “During the school year, you’re reading some great books assigned to you by your teachers, said Penny Kerfien, Director. “Why not take advantage of your free time over the summer to choose your own books? But with so many choices out there, how does a child know where to start? Librarians are trained to direct children to books and other reading materials that best suit their personality, interests and imagination. “As parents structure their children’s summertime activities, they should remember to put reading into the mix. Once children discover the fun of reading for pleasure, they can’t be stopped,” says Penny Kerfien.

Catch The Reading Bug And Metamorphosis @ Your Library focuses on children’s love of bugs and what happens to them. Summertime at public libraries opens up a whole new social world for children and their parents. New books and programs provide new adventures for children.

Fulton Public Library is taking registrations until July 9th and the program runs from July 7th through August 15th. The program is open to all children through high school. Children may register at the Carnegie Main Library or the David E. Vayner Library. Prizes have been bought or donated by local businesses. There will be story hours, which include crafts and activities at both locations. At Carnegie Main Library, they will be Tuesdays at 10:30 for Toddlers through grade 2 and on Fridays at 10:30 for grades 3 through 6. At the David E. Vayner Branch, the time will be Thursdays at 4 pm.

As a supplement to the onsite library programs, a summer reading website at www.summerreadingnys.org provides age-appropriate booklists and tips for parents to encourage summer reading.
