Fulton School Budget, Library Tax Approved; Voters Turn Out 21-Year Incumbent

Voters in Fulton gave strong approval to a school budget for next school year and even stronger approval to funding for the Fulton Public Library.

But one of the leaders of the effort to craft and pass a budget did not survive the night’s voting.

Voters approved the budget 753-468 and the $170,000 library tax 761-396.  Propositions to buy three vehicles and set up a reserve fund for future capital projects were also approved by wide margins.

“It was a good turnout, which is what we ask for because you want to get the will of the voters and it’s a very strong budget majority in favor, which is gratifying,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch.

But there was a shock in the numbers.  President of the Board of Education Robbin Griffin failed to win reelection, ending a 21-year career on the board.  Griffin hugged incumbent Rosemary Occhino and congratulated Dan Pawlewicz, the man who won Griffin’s seat.

Pawlewicz had been a member of the board in the past, but left a year ago to spend more time with his family.

“That’s an awful lot of experience and knowledge that won’t be sitting at the board table,” said Lynch. “She has more experience than most people in a school district.”

The district will recanvas the tallies in each voting machine before making the results official.
