Fulton Voters Approve New Construction Project

Voters said yes Wednesday to new roofs, boilers, security and wiring in the Fulton City School District.

They approved two construction propositions by votes of 211-128 and 209-130.

“Obviously, we’re very pleased with the vote,” said Superintendent of Schools Bill Lynch. “This is a great opportunity for the community and the kids to continue to modernize our facilities.”

The new projects will:

• Put a new roof on Fulton Jr. High School and on part of Fairgrieve Elementary;
• Allow for security improvements such as better lighting and keyless door locks;
• Put better electric and computer wiring in buildings that are not getting better wiring in the current construction project;
• Install new boilers in G. Ray Bodley High School.

The project is fairly small by the usual standards — $3.85 million.  It’s intended to use the last remaining dollars made available to the district by the state under its EXCEL program for infrastructure repair.  A small portion of the project will not be covered by EXCEL funds, but will be covered by regular state building aid.  Local taxpayers are not expected to pay any of the cost of the project.

Lynch said the district hopes to have its construction documents to the state in February.  If the state can approve them on time, everything but the boiler work can be done this coming summer.  The boilers will have to wait until the 2010-2011 school year because of the amount of time it takes to have them built and shipped.

Work done this summer would take place alongside the second summer of the current $23.5 million project covering extensive work at the high school, education center, athletic complex and Lanigan Elementary school.
