HANNIBAL, NY – Teachers and other professional staff in the Hannibal Central School District will begin the 2008-09 school year under a new labor agreement.

The Board of Education voted this month to accept a new four-year contract with the Hannibal Faculty Association. The union is made up of teachers, counselors, nurses and school psychologists.

The contract is retroactive to the 2007-08 school year and expires at the end of the 2010-11 school year. It provides 3.5 percent pay increases each year of the contract, according to Superintendent Michael DiFabio.

Among the changes written into the agreement, DiFabio noted that the contract creates department heads in the Hannibal Central School District.

“We’ve never had department heads before,” he said. “I am excited about having department heads so we can move forward on curriculum and instruction issues.

“Other than that, there were no really major changes,” DiFabio added.

DiFabio pointed out that negotiations on the contract were lengthy, based on the differences the two sides had at the beginning of the process.

“We were far apart in the beginning,” he said. “It is just a process you have to work through to meet in the middle.

“Overall, we met on a really good contract,” he added.
