Letter: Cigarette Tax Hike A Good Time To Quit

by Contributor | May 26, 2008 8:52 pm

Dear Editor:

Many people believe in the expression, “Everything happens for a reason.” I believe that the June 3rd tobacco tax increase of $1.25 a pack is a perfect example to use for this saying. Instead of complaining about the rising cost of yet another consumer product, I hope that smokers embrace the increase as a motivator to quit their lethal habit.

Consider this passing of legislation as a wakeup call. A decision to quit smoking will mean much more than extra money in your pocket; it brings a boost in energy, easier breathing, and cleaner lungs. It could mean the difference between life and death.

I hope June 3rd will be a turning point for smokers in our community. Instead of spending extra cash for cigarettes, they will be encouraged to quit and spend extra years with their family and friends.

Sincerely,

Brooke McLymond
