FULTON – Mayor Deana Michaels has promoted Malcolm Wettering to Bureau Chief of the City of Fulton Bureau of Codes Enforcement.

Wettering has been a Code Enforcement Officer for four years with the City of Fulton. Before that he owned his own plumbing and heating business.

John Dunham will be retiring at the end of the month and the City has started the search process for a new Code Enforcement Officer. The city has also welcomed Tom Trowbridge and Cassandra Jones to the Bureau team in late 2019.

“The Bureau of Code Enforcement is moving in a positive new direction with high expectations and goals,” Wettering said. “The goal is to improve the quality of life and standard of living for the City of Fulton.  With the proper tools and resources I can see the department moving to a new level.  It’s out with the old way of doing business and in with new policy, procedure, a better customer experience and an education first approach.  Team Codes is ready for this new improved challenge”

“Coming into office the Bureau of Codes was a clear priority for me.  While the issues were not created overnight and will not be fixed overnight, change needs to happen now,” Michaels said. “Since I’ve been mayor, we’ve looked at new training opportunities, enhancing the customer experience, improving our staffing model, updating forms, fees and fines and collaborating with the fire and police departments, the assessor and the courts system to make our neighborhoods cleaner and safer.”

The Police Department and the Bureau are working together on a program to address activity at vacant properties throughout the city.

When City Hall can open up to the public the Bureau has redesigned their physical space to be more inviting and efficient for the customer.  The Bureau is also working on cleaning up forms and improving accessibility of information.

The mayor also asked that all codes vehicles be clearly marked so that residents know when the vehicles are in their neighborhoods. The mayor has been visiting the neighborhoods to see firsthand the issues.  She will continue these efforts by riding along with the codes departments to address problem areas.

“While the COVID outbreak changed the way we work at City Hall, we still moved forward on improving the way the City works and the Bureau of Code Enforcement was our top priority and remains our top priority,” Michaels said.
