Mentoring Partnership Hosts Community Dinner At Fulton Junior High

FULTON, NY – SUNY Oswego’s Mentor-Scholar Program, in partnership with Fulton City School District’s Community School, served more than 80 guests at its community dinner recently at Fulton Junior High.

“Events like this are a great way to bring communities together to realize the impact that individuals and organizations can have through shared resources,” said Scott Ball, project coordinator of Mentor-Scholar.

The spaghetti dinner, organized by Janice Scott, Community School resource coordinator, was free to guests, including students, college mentors, community leaders and families.

Mentor-Scholar is a collaborative effort of SUNY Oswego, AmeriCorps VISTA and local school districts that provides secondary students with the support of undergraduate mentors throughout the academic year.

Mentoring pairs meet after school for academic and social enrichment activities, including homework help, service projects and community field trips.

In return for their one-year commitment, SUNY Oswego mentors earn course credit and valuable professional experience.

The Fulton Community School brings community resources together to increase student success.

While mentor-scholars and their mentees prepared the spaghetti and salad, the students in the Community School Extended Day group set up and decorated the cafeteria, Cooking Club prepared brownies for dessert and the Board Game Club shared a game they created about Fulton.

Guests enjoyed a lively evening of dinner, conversation and games.

Event sponsors included Domino’s Pizza, Struppler’s Supermarket, Hudson Dairy, Price Chopper, Wegman’s, Fulton Community School, Fulton Junior High and SUNY Oswego.
