NY Bill Would Use Route 34 to Honor Harriet Tubman

A bill in the state legislature would name State Route 34, which begins in Hannibal, the “Harriet Tubman Memorial Highway.â€
Harriet Tubman[1] was a famous abolitionist who helped bring slaves from the south to freedom in the north along the Underground Railroad.
Democratic state Senator Dave Valesky, who mainly represents the Syracuse area, sponsored the measure.
“The legislation celebrants the hard work and sacrifices Harriet Tubman made in the name of abolition,†said Valesky in a statement.
Route 34[2] begins in the town of Hannibal and runs south to the Pennsylvania border.
It passes through Auburn, the city where Tubman eventually settled. Her home in Auburn [3]is a historical site and a tourist attraction.
The bill still needs to win approval from the state Assembly.
