OSWEGO, NY – Voters in the Oswego City School District will return to the polls on Tuesday for a revote on the proposed 2008-09 budget.
After the budget was defeated on May 20 the Oswego City School District Board of Education met to rework the proposal.
In the exit survey there were voters who were concerned about the reduction of programs while others were concerned about taxes.
The members of the board of education decided to let the community decide upon the budget.
Positions were restored to the new budget proposal.
The majority of the restorations were at the elementary school level as two art and two music teachers along a physical education and a librarian were included in the new budget. Also restored was a secondary technology teacher as well as three hall monitors.
The voters will be deciding upon a $67,126,271 proposed budget, which is still below nearly $400,000 below the maximum contingency budget that is allowed by law.
This proposal is 5.37% above last year’s budget.
The budget that was defeated in May provided an increase of 4.53%.
The anticipated tax rate would be $21.87 per thousand dollars assessed value, which would be a $1.20 more per thousand than the current year.
It should be noted that the expected tax levy and expected tax rate are based on assumptions that may change given expected State Aid revenues, and current property value assessments versus those assessed values reported by the Office of Real Property tax in August 2008.
District officials noted that the estimated total tax increase for a $70,000 home with STAR would be approximately $48 while without STAR the increase would be $84.
Voting on the budget will be from noon to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
Voters will go to their regular school district polling places.
The first ward in Oswego will vote at the McCrobie Buildings while the second ward will cast their ballots at Fitzhugh Park Elementary School. Frederick Leighton Elementary School will be the setting for third ward voters while in the fourth ward the Education Center will be the voting site. In the fifth ward voters should go to the Kingsford Park Elementary School while sixth ward voters will vote at the Charles E. Riley Elementary School.
Residents of the town of Minetto and Volney vote at the Minetto Elementary School while the Oswego Town Hall is the scene for voters from Oswego Town and Sterling.
The Scriba Justice Center will be the setting for voting for Scriba residents.
Absentee ballots will be available for the June 17 vote and applications can be obtained at the District Clerk’s office on the lower level of the Education Center, 120 E. First St., during regular weekday working hours.
