OSWEGO, NY – A man was taken into custody early today (May 26) after holding police at bay with a rifle overnight.

On May 26, the subject, William P. Deibel II, 27, of 25 Cedarwood Drive, Oswego, was charged by Oswego Police with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (Class A misdemeanor).
Deibel was arraigned before Judge Shanley and released on $500 bail.
Deibel is to return to Oswego City Court on May 29. The previous information appears below:
At about 9:48 p.m. Sunday, Oswego Police responded to Cedarwood Drive for a “check the welfare†complaint.
Upon arrival, police observed a male, who appeared to be distraught, armed with a rifle.
Officers from the Oswego Police Department were assisted by members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police in containing the individual to his apartment.
Due to safety concerns, several apartments in the area had to be evacuated.
The Oswego Police Department’s Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene.
A Crisis Negotiator and the Emergency Services Unit from the Oswego County Sheriff’s Department were also requested and responded to assist.
Police attempted to initiate contact with the man throughout the night.
After several hours of repeated attempts, police were successful in contacting the man.
At approximately 5:10 a.m. today (May 26), the man was taken into custody, without injury, and transported to Oswego Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, identifying information is not being released at this time.
No charges have been filed at this time pending the outcome of the investigation.
