Resident Supports Library Request

The upcoming vote on the Fulton School District budget will include a proposition to increase funding for the Fulton Public Library from $40,000 to $90,000. While this may seem an exorbitant amount at first glance, the actual cost to a taxpayer with a house assessed at $65,000 would only be an additional $4.94 per year. The library has received a $33,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to upgrade its computers as well as a $70,000 grant to install an elevator to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. However, in order to receive these grants the library must provide matching funds. The library board is actively pursuing fund-raising but needs support from the community, especially in light of the city’s $30,000 budget cut for the library this year.

The library provides services that benefit the entire community and has seen a marked increase in the number of patrons utilizing these services. Without proper funding, the library cannot grow and expand its offerings and may, in fact, be forced to decrease services.

I urge all residents going to the polls to vote yes on the proposition to increase the library’s funding.
