Scene Around Town: Onions Ready For Harvest
by Contributor | October 12, 2009 8:03 am
I was driving along Route 176 over the weekend and caught this scene — thousands of onions, waiting to be harvested.
By chance, I bumped into the owner, county legislator Morris Sorbello of Sorbello Farms. He said the onions are out in the fields because the heavy rains of the last week made it impossible to take machinery out into the much to harvest them.
His main concern is that a hard frost will come along before he can get to the onions.
Otherwise, he told me that this year’s harvest is among the best in many years.

Onions lay in long rows at Sorbello Farms, ready for harvest as soon as the soil dries enough to allow machines to go onto the muck.
