The theme of this year’s Memorial Day Salute was ‘A grateful community says “Thanks” to our Veterans.”First of all, we want to commend the Fulton service clubs — Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary Sunrise — and the Memorial Day Salute committee for bringing the community together to recognize the ultimate sacrifice that was made by young men and women whose lives were taken as they protected and ensured our freedom. We thank the Veteran’s Council and their members for continuing to remind all of us of how important it is that we never forget.
I had the privilege of standing along with others as the veterans on Monday paid their respects at St. Mary’s, Mt. Adnah, City Hall and the War Memorial as I have done for a number of years. Each year there are fewer veterans as part of this homage. Missing this year were highly respected veterans Ted Maliszewski and Joe Swiatlowski who have passed. It was certainly a pleasure to see the naming of Erwin “Buss” Allen as the 2008 Veteran of the Year.
On Friday and Saturday, the four service clubs gathered at the Fulton Community Center to provide everyone with excellent local and national entertainment and made sure that everyone was able to enjoy different varieties of food and beverages. The amusement area and fireworks provided fun for the entire family.
Certainly the use of the word community reflects upon the involvement of so many members of our city that were connected with so many organizations that proudly marched in Oswego County’s biggest parade. It was good to see so many people in the community turn out to show their appreciation of the veterans and the organizations that worked so hard to make an important day one of remembrance.
In closing, we want to recognize and say “Thanks” to all the men and women who are presently serving throughout the world to ensure our safety and freedom.
