Writer Says Smoking’s Not Sexy

Dear Editor:

Smokers, think of the “ick” in nicotine and dump those cigarettes – just in time for the increased cost coming up on June 3rd.

Did you know smoking not only directly affects your health, but it also affects your relationships? Yes, it’s true. Doctors and scientists agree, and the statistics show that smoking can dampen those intimate moments. Some of those moments are:

1. Smoking lowers your libido. The libido is our sex drive. Research shows that men as young as their 20s can have a decreased sex drive from smoking. Smoking is also linked to impotence and a decreased sperm count.
2. Smoking causes bad breath. Smoking not only causes unpleasant breath, it also lingers on your clothes and in your hair.
3. Smoking causes yellow teeth. Yellow teeth and fingernails are common side effects from smoking.

In all, smoking is not as sexy as the tobacco companies would have you believe. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars a year to make you believe that smoking is sexy and glamorous. Yet, an overwhelming amount of the general public believes that smoking is anything but sexy!

If you are ready, help is available. The New York State Smokers’ Quitline offers free coaching and quit plans, and free nicotine patches, gum, and lozenges. Just call the toll-free number, 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487). You can also get additional information on the quitline web site at www.nysmokefree.com.
