Heat Advisory Issued Second Day In A Row

OSWEGO COUNTY – The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory[1] for Oswego County beginning today, August 11, at noon and ending later today at 7 p.m.

The NWS expects heat index values to reach the mid 90s and warn that the hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses.

They advise everyone to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and to check on relatives and neighbors. They also say young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

According to the NWS, one should do the following during a heat advisory:

• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.

The National Weather Service forecast[2] is as following (Oswego County Airport, Fulton, NY):

Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 90. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 7pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 68. West wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
