National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisory; Heat Index Expected To Reach Mid 90s

OSWEGO COUNTY – The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory[1] for Oswego County beginning today, August 10, at 1 p.m. and ending later today at 7 p.m.

The NWS expects heat index values to reach the mid 90s and warn that the hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses.

They advise everyone to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and to check on relatives and neighbors. They also say young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

According to the NWS, one should do the following during a heat advisory:

• Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
• When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
• Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
• Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
• To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.

The National Weather Service forecast[2] is as following (Oswego County Airport, Fulton, NY):

Today: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before noon, then isolated showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 72. South wind 5 to 8 mph.
