OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County announces its website, www.oswegocounty.com[1], will transition to www.oswegocountyny.gov[2] on Friday, Oct. 31 to comply with New York State legislation and help ensure ongoing safe cyber practices.
The legislation amends NYS General Municipal Law §§ 300 and 30(7) and requires all municipal entities with a population of 1,500 or more to establish and maintain an official website with a ‘.gov’ domain.
“The new domain boosts security around Oswego County’s cyber footprint and makes it more difficult for online criminals to try to misuse or misrepresent our resources and representatives,” said Oswego County Legislature Chairman James Weatherup, District 9. “Our citizens can rest easy knowing that our website will continue to provide them with official, verified information they can trust.”
To maintain the integrity of the ‘.gov’ domain name, eligibility is limited to verified U.S.-based government organizations only. Applicants are vetted by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
“Having a ‘.gov’ domain name elevates Oswego County’s online presence,” said Oswego County Information Technology Director Greg Powlin. “Search engines and users recognize the authenticity of a ‘.gov’ website, which is especially important when people are looking for official government information and resources. These sites support access to public services through secure internet or ‘https’ connections and provide additional protection measures such as user verification.”
The previous web address, www.oswegocounty.com[1], will forward users to the County’s new domain name for the foreseeable future. All county information and services will continue to be available to users throughout this process.
County employees’ contact information will also reflect the domain change with the new extension ‘@oswegocountyny.gov’ at the end of their email addresses.
The first set of domain extensions was developed in the 1980s and included ‘.com,’ ‘.org,’ ‘.net,’ ‘.edu,’ ‘.mil,’ and ‘.gov.’ The last one was originally intended for the federal government only, but over the last 40 years, its use was expanded to include state and local government entities.
