OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County building that houses the Oswego branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles Office and the Oswego County Records Center now bears the name of the man whose vision brought about its development.

On June 14, long-time County Clerk George J. Williams was honored in a dedication ceremony led by current Oswego County Clerk Terry Wilbur. Several distinguished speakers and family members remembered the former clerk and his impact on the community prior to unveiling a wall plaque in the entryway and his name on the outside of the building.

The Oswego Motor Vehicle Office and Oswego County Records Center building has been dedicated to the late George J. Williams. First elected as Oswego County Clerk in 1981, Williams served that office for over 30 years before his death in 2012. Williams was first elected Oswego County Clerk in 1981 and served until his death in 2012. During his tenure, Williams focused special attention on various improvements and developments within the clerk’s office, records center and motor vehicle offices to modernize operations and enhance residents’ transactional experiences.

A dedicated public servant, Williams served as a County Legislator for the town of Constantia for six years prior to becoming Oswego County Clerk. He also served as past president of the New York State Association of County Clerks (NYSACC), was honored as County Clerk of the Year in 1989 and received the NYSACC Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

In addition to land and court records, pistol permits, passport applications, business certificates and a variety of other filings, the Oswego County Clerk’s Office also oversees the county’s records center and three branches of the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles in Oswego, Fulton and Pulaski.

The Oswego County Legislature approved the resolution to dedicate the building last September in a unanimous vote.
